Beauly Sixes prove a great success!

By Gregor MacCormick

Beauly teams come out on top in two closely contested finals!

Our annual sixes proved to be a fantastic success and had a great turnout of clubs on the day. Across all the age groups we had nearly 200 children playing shinty at Braeview and it was great to see the effort, skill and sportsmanship being displayed by all the children. Well done to all the players and coaches involved.

For the P5& Under competition, Beauly managed to put out two strong teams. After some very close group league games , both Beauly teams managed to make it through the league stages and into the semi-finals. Beauly A finishing second in their group to Inverness A, and the young Beauly B coming out on top and winning their group with
Newtonmore second.

The two semi-finals proved close affairs as Beauly A managed to edge past Newtonmore and win 1-0 in a great game. In the other semi, our young Beauly B team faced a very impressive Inverness team. After pushing them very hard throughout the game they eventually lost out 1-0. The final was Beauly A versus Inverness A. This game had everything including an offside goal for Inverness, a missed penalty by Inverness and then extra time with chances for both teams. Both teams played some excellent shinty and Beauly did well to stay in the game at times. It took a penalty shootout to seperate the teams, with Beauly eventually getting the decisive goal which meant they lifted the cup. Very hard luck on Inverness. Both teams should be very proud of their efforts in what was a great advert for kids shinty at this age group.

We had 10 teams entered in the P7 & Under competition and Coach MacColl decided to go with two teams - Beauly A made up of the P7 players, and Beauly B made up of all our P6 players. Both teams played in different leagues in the group stages. This included teams from Carrbridge, Newtonmore, Lovat, Glenurquhart along with old foes Caberfeidh and Inverness. After some great shinty, both Beauly teams made it out of the group stages into the semi-finals. Beauly A being unbeaten in their group and finishing top ahead of Newtonmore, and Beauly B finishing 2nd behind Inverness in their group.

This set up a semi-final where both Beauly teams met each other. After a very committed game and great effort by all the players, Beauly A managed to come out on top of their younger team-mates in Beauly B. Beauly B should be very proud of themselves, however, as they matched their older counterparts throughout most of the game. In the other semi-final, Newtonmore managed to get a good win against a strong Inverness team.

This set up a mouth-watering final of Beauly A and Newtonmore. Beauly got off to a great start and snatched a quick goal through James Morrison. James then managed to get his second and it looked like Beauly were in control. Newtonmore came right back into the game, however, and after some great play managed to pull a goal back. 2-1. The game was flowing from end to end and difficult to predict how would go. A great ball forward was then picked up by Euan who managed to beat his man and lash a great shot into the net to make it 3-1. Newtonmore didn't let their heads go down and quickly pulled one back to make it 3-2. Finlay MacLennan then saved Beauly with some fantastic stops and racing out his goals to block a Newtonmore forward just as he was about to pull the trigger - well done Finlay. With nerves jangling as Newtonmore continued to press, the final whistle went and Beauly held on for the win. Well done boys.

The whole competition was a great success and only spoilt by the heavy rain for a period during the middle of the tournament.

The club would wish to thanks all the players, coaches and clubs who attended and made the tournament such a success.

The club would also give a big thank you to all the helpers on the day, the referees, and above all our tea ladies who kept the masses fed throughout the day

Finally, the club would like to thank Neil Patterson, Shinty Photographer, for coming along on the day. If you keep an eye on his website his photos will be posted in due course.

Thank you.
